What we will be learning…with top learning tips
Reading…In our guided reading sessions we will continue to focus on developing comprehension skills. We will also look at key vocabulary used in the texts and begin to unpick the meaning of words. As children move through the colour bands we will be encouraging them to sound out unfamiliar words in their head in order to begin to develop fluency and expression.
Learning Top Tip – If you come across a word you can read but do not understand ask an adult to explain its meaning to you or look up its meaning using a dictionary.
Maths…. We will be revisiting counting in steps of 2, 3, 5 and 10 and using our multiplication and division skills gained from last term to start exploring quarters, thirds and halves. We will also be looking at 2D and 3D shapes and their properties, as well as telling the time and understanding different units of time and measure. There will continue to be a weekly home learning task linked to maths.
Learning Top Tip – The more you practise the better you become at maths. Remember there are lots of resources that can help you in our maths area. There are many online resources to help with maths at home! Such as https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/index.html
GRAMMAR / Spellings – We will be focusing on persuasive writing, non-chronological reports and narrative writing, using adjectives and adverbs to add detail and using different conjunctions- both co-ordinating (and, but , so) and subordinating ( when , if, because). Some children will begin to learn to spell the Year 2 common exception words whilst others will focus on spelling patterns taught through the Read Write Inc. spelling programme.
Learning Top Tip – Use the displays around the classroom to help you remember how to spell words and what they mean. Always ask if you need a word to be explained again so that you are clear and can have a go at using them successfully when writing or reading.
Science –We will be planning in more science days this term where the focus will be on animals, including humans and how to keep the body healthy.
Geography – Knowledge of the equator, the UK’s countries and capital cities and the locations in the seven continents.
Art- Exploring and experimenting with colour and shape. Looking at the work of artists Mondrian and Kandinsky as inspiration.
PSHCE/ Jigsaw – Going for goals.
PE- Outdoor PE, on a Wednesday will be invasion games which will build on the ball skills learnt last term. Indoor PE, on a Thursday, this term will be gymnastics. PE KIT should be in school all the time. As the weather remains cold we encourage children to wear tracksuits, joggers or leggings for outdoor PE, and trainers are best.
It is crucial for your child’s health & wellbeing that they participate in all PE activities. Please ensure they have their PE kit in school.
To find out all about what we will be learning about this half term, and all about school life, please open our current Year 2 learning letter.
Please make sure that all school uniform and PE kit is clearly labelled. We advise kits to be in school throughout the week as classes have PE on different days throughout the week. Please include joggers and a sweatshirt for outdoor PE.
We do PE on: Wednesday and Friday.
Please let the school and the teacher know if your child has any allergies (that we do not already know about) or needs to take any medication.
Please remind your child to bring a coat every day in the winter months.
