What we will be learning…with top learning tips

Guided reading –developing comprehension skills to pick out information and answer a range of questions relating to the text.  Individual reading – developing fluency and expression and being able to talk about preferences and make links with reference to the text and other books.

Learning Top Tip – Try to read as often as possible. Read different types of books and texts and develop a love of reading. Being a good reader helps you to become an even better learner.

Writing – Recounts, poetry, instructions and report writing linked to our history topic on local fossil collector, Mary Anning

Learning Top Tip – Now is the chance to show off what you have learnt. Try to use different types of sentences in your writing and a range of punctuation. Form letters clearly and begin to join your writing.

GRAMMAR – Use Yr2 grammatical language when talking about your writing. Show that you understand different word class, sentences types and how to use a range of punctuation accurately.

Spelling – Continue to learn a range of spelling rules and apply them when writing and editing your work.  Revisit and practice the spelling of YR1 and 2 common exception words and words that follow phonic patterns.

Maths….Revision of topics place value and number facts including number to and within 10, recapping strategies and methods to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, measuring length, weight and capacity and reading scales in divisions of 1, 2 5 and 10 including worded problems and data handling.

Learning Top Tip – Always use the maths displays and tool kits to support your learning or draw simple pictures and symbols to help you solve calculations. Think about the operation and try estimating answers or use the inverse operation to check them.

Science –Animals including humans and Plants and how they grow, including experiments on the best conditions for growth.

Art – Print making and observational drawing, both linked to our Science topics on animals and plants.

Geography- Continents and oceans of the world.

History – Footprints through time, focusing on two local people of historical importance -Mary Anning and Doctor Roberts.

PSHCE/ Jigsaw – Healthy Me and Relationships. After the half term break we will also be learning about ‘changes’, this includes age-relevant information on ‘sex & relationships’. More details will follow later this half-term.

PE- Athletics- including running, jumping and throwing activities on a Wednesday afternoon and football skills with Lee Cuff up until half term on a Thursday. After half term we will be doing gymnastics in the hall on Thursdays. PE KIT should be in school all the time. As the weather turns warmer we encourage children to bring in a sun hat or cap to wear for outdoor PE, and trainers are always best.
