Rights Respecting Schools

Bridport Primary School is a school committed to:

We are accredited with Level Two of the UNICEF award for supporting the Rights of the child. This means that we believe in promoting the UNCRC agreement signed by Governments to protect the children’s Rights worldwide.

All pupils at Bridport Primary School are fully aware of their Rights and the Responsibility they have to behave appropriately as young citizens in their community.

Pupil’s opinions are valued and their ideas always considered.
We endeavour to promote Global Citizenship through our creative curriculum and believe that every child should have the opportunity to have their say in the important issues that affect them and those who come after them.

Articles 13 and 16 in Key Stage 1

  • Children have a peg with their own name on.
  • Children have the Right to their own drawer which is not accessed by anyone else.
  • Children have their own lunch bag.
  • Children can talk about their families without ridicule or negative comments.
  • Children should share the way they live – routines, celebrations and family life without fear of negativity.
  • Children should be able to look at library books and artefacts and discuss this information with others.
  • Children should be encouraged to enjoy information about topics related to other people’s way of life and celebrate the differences.
  • Children should be encouraged to discuss bullying and any name-calling they experience for class discussion – solutions should be sought.
  • Children should be encouraged to use the Internet for research with supervision and appropriate guidance.
  • Children should be encouraged to take photos for class work but be mindful of others when they do so.

Articles 13 and 16 in Key Stage 2

  • Children have the Right to their own bag and drawer that only they have access to.
  • Children can talk about their families without ridicule or negative comments.
  • Children should share the way they live – routines, celebrations and family life without fear of negativity.
  • Children should be able to look at library books and artefacts and research information on the Internet at appropriate level.
  • Children should be encouraged to enjoy information about topics related to other people’s way of life and celebrate the differences.
  • Children should be encouraged to discuss bullying and any name-calling they experience.
  • Children should be taught that racism is unacceptable in any form
  • Children should be taught that the Internet can be unsafe and guidance is required for safe use.
  • Children should be encouraged to take photos for class work. These photos should be acceptable to all pupils and not removed from the classroom
  • Pupils should be taught not to take photos without permission of those in them.
  • Pupils have the Right to privacy when changing for PE and swimming
  • Pupils have the Right not to disclose information about their families if they choose not to.
  • Pupils should be taught not to pass on negative information about another child or adult in the school.
  • Children should be taught that they have a responsibility to each other to protect others from any personal attack.
  • Children should be taught that they have a responsibility to report incidents of negativity or harm to others.
